In the constant and ever-changing realm of college athletics within the United States, the surge of international talent has become a major factor in helping to spotlight standout athletes who have accomplished numerous accolades in and away from their respective sports.
With the promise of elite competition, high-class education, as well as the potential professional opportunities that can come to light from these college programs, the appeal to taking the leap of faith into being an international student-athlete within the United States offers more than just these opportunities, it provides insight into what the American dream and the doors that can be opened at the hands of it.
In recent years, these international student-athletes have seen a significant influx within the American college athletic community. Unlike their international institutions, the bridge between athletes and academics is seemingly separated, leading to an interest in expanding overseas. Across the United States, it has been documented that close to 24,000 international student-athletes have been recorded competing at all levels of college athletics, and the numbers are hopeful to grow.
Seen and acknowledged by the NCAA, Senior Vice President of Inclusion, Education and Community Engagement, Felica Martine stated that:
“We understand there can be challenges with choosing the right college and leaving one's home country for the U.S., where each region and state has its own history, dialect and climate," said Felicia Martin, senior vice president of inclusion, education and community engagement. "This resource provides valuable information on educational, social, cultural, and economic aspects of studying and competing in the U.S. so that our international student-athletes have a better idea of what to expect.”
Being an International student-athlete comes with many advantages, such as diversifying their respective institutions as well as receiving an education and athletic competition not easily accessed within their home countries.
International student disadvantages also emerge at the same time and are often overlooked when their talents are projected at the national level for entertainment purposes.
Language barriers, cultural differences, homesickness, and stereotypes are major factors that can be seen negatively affecting the mental well-being of International student-athletes.
However, a major disadvantage that comes to light is the risk of the NCAA’s international student-athletes’ numbers and their expansion dwindling in light of new policies and recent administration changes within the United States.
